This weeks hike will be Ape Canyon! This hike is 10.1 mile and rated as difficult with an elevation gain of 2125ft so hikers come prepared for a climb! We will set a moderate pace allowing for time to take pictures, take in the view on the way up, and enjoy lunch before heading back out. Back pack with plenty of water & snacks is a must, along with proper hiking shoes & comfortable clothing. The drive up from our meet up at Chelatchie Prairie Store is about 50-60 mins. The road up can also get a bit rough for smaller vehicles with low ground clearance, so SUV 4X4 is recommended. There is a small parking lot so car pool is recommend. Meet up for car pool & car train is at 8:00am we will leave meet up at 8:15 no later. Please be on time and communicate with Michelle regarding any issues or concerns. Let’s hit the trail!

Trail Description: Beginning next to the mudflow that traveled down the Muddy River drainage, the trail climbs steadily through a plantation of young trees before entering groves of giant Douglas fir, silver and noble fir. The trail then emerges on an open ridge top with views east into Ape Canyon and in the distance, Mount Adams. Wildflowers, when in bloom, paint these meadows in vibrant colors. Continuing along the ridge, the trail passes through patches of 1980 standing dead forest before emerging at the top of Ape Canyon, where it terminates at the junction with Loowit Trail #216.

Parking: $5/vehicle/day or valid Recreation Pass ~ Hikers may be advised to obtain pass online prior to arrival.

Required Equipment: Water & snacks, lunch if you would like. Proper hiking shoes & clothing that are weather appropriate.

Recommended extras: Walking stick, sun glasses, camera
